Katla is the Norwegian-Icelandic chef Atli Mar Yngvasson's new restaurant. The name Katla is taken from one of the largest volcanoes in Iceland. Much like the volcano itself, the restaurant is bursting with energy, featuring an open kitchen, a high-energy atmosphere, and a focus on bold, elemental cooking techniques. Food is prepared over open flames, and sauces are crafted on lava rocks.
The restaurant’s graphic design mirrors this fusion of cultures and nature’s raw power. At the heart of the visual identity is a typographic icon, or totem, inspired by the Katla volcano. This design element serves as a powerful visual metaphor, uniting the different culinary traditions under a cohesive brand. The totem is rooted in the clean, minimalist aesthetic characteristic of Nordic design but is infused with organic textures and bold forms to represent the raw, untamed energy of the volcano.
